International Adoption Statistics

The total number of children adopted internationally to the U.S. from 1999-2013 was 249,694. This map shows the sending countries and number of children adopted for 2011.

The percentage of adoptions from China as part of international adoptions from 1999 - 2013 was 28.6% making China the largest sending country for about 10 years.

In 2004 there were 22,991 international adoptions. By 2013 international adoptions fell to 7,094, a difference of 15,897 or a 69% decrease. The reasons for the decline among all sending countries vary, but for China the reasons were about stricter regulations and a push for more adoptions by Chinese.
