Media
The media seems to be very interested in the experience of children adopted from China, maybe even more than other internationally adopted children, at least given the large number of articles and documentaries specifically about Chinese adoptees. This could be because for about 10 years more children were adopted to the United States from China than any other country, or maybe because of the fascination many Americans have for China.
Numerous articles in newspapers and magazines have been written, and films and documentaries made about individual adoptees, their identity questions and their journeys to find their roots in China, even searches for birth parents. These media portrayals of searches for identity give an idea of what some of the issues are although they are different for every adoptee. Many of these media perspectives all seem a little removed tone from the deeper issues, and many seem to have a ‘happily ever after’ ending. But for better or worse they do communicate to a lot of people, they tell a lot of stories and describe a common journey and reaction. This is the message that many people, including adoptees, hear about their experiences as adoptees in general, and as transracial adoptees from China specifically.
